It starts out pretty standard for a feature on classic 911s, singing the praises of early Porsches without fault. In other words, a little bit sickening if you're not a massive fan of Porsches. Then, something is said that I don't think I've ever heard in a 911-centric video.

From 7:37 to 7:57 he says 'it doesn't even necessarily have to be a Porsche'. It's so refreshing to hear someone acknowledge that there are other classic cars than a 911.

I like this Magnus guy. He knows where it's at. He even says he wants to branch out and try a 928 and a 924!

I understand and admire the passion people have for Porsche, and the popularity of videos about them, but it's nice to hear that their fans aren't always dogmatically sure that the 911 is the only car worth owning. That it is their particular area of enthusiasm.

Magnus is hording these damn things and increasing prices. Soon the average enthusiast won't be able to afford a nice older example of a 911 :/

I think this is the only time I've ever been distracted from the beauty of a 911... by a beard... This guy's beard and hair are mesmerising. What a legend.

Great video, thanks for sharing!

I think that it would be easy to fall in love with a 911 and disregard any other car. The 911 does almost everything. It is super reliable, deadly, fast, fun to drive, good looking, timeless, has parts support and a huge following.

Name me any car that can match the complete package offered by the 911.

They mentioned on 5th Gear that he made his fortune customizing jeans. JEANS.

Anyone need me to bedazzle a shirt for them?

If you liked this, check out ' urban outlaw '. It's a short film all about Magnus and his modified Porsches. Great cinematography too.

I haven't got that much of an issue with him hoarding the things. It's desirability that's pushing the prices up in the 911's case, rather than rarity. There's loads of them left, especially compared to some other (much cheaper) classics.

Take the E-Type for example. There's literally tons of those left, but here in the UK they start at around £30k for a shitty 2+2 V12 and skyrocket from there. I think for a driveable series 1 or 2 convertible you'll be looking at at least £80k.

It bugs me when people hoard cars and never use them, just let them rot, but it doesn't seem like he does that.

I also get why the 911 is so alluring, but there are plenty of alternatives.

The E-Type springs to mind (once you replace the cheap parts put in from the factory to keep the costs down they're easily as reliable as a 911), any of the pony car triumvirate (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger), any other popular muscle car for that matter, 240Z, 2002, 2000 GTV, TR250/TR6 or a Lotus Elan even.

That's just in the States too. If you want to venture over here then there's the Mk1 Escort RS1600, the MGB GT V8, a Rover engined Stag, older Ford Capris. On the continent you can find Alpines (and Alpine clones), nutty Swedish Volvos, . All of those have fantastic parts availability, a strong following and for the same money you'd plow into making a fast 911 could be pretty damn fast themselves.

Then, if you don't mind sacrificing speed for dirt cheap parts you could go with a Spitfire, Midget/Sprite, MGB, Mini Cooper, little Abarth 500s, Hillman Imps etc. The last three candidates are certified giant killers.

The 911 is so popular for a reason, but it's far from the only answer.

He's buying them up, customizing them and releasing them back into the market at increasingly out-of-reach prices, like RWB or Singer. Granted these are limited numbers but it is going to make it increasingly difficult to find one of these cars unmolested.

Good point, but that's an issue with modifying any car to a standard that it's worth more than stock.

It's irritating that some cars are getting more and more out of reach, but that's fairly inevitable even if people aren't modifying them. As they start to get truly rare through rust and neglect the price will go up. Eventually (hopefully a long time away), there won't be many of anything from that era left.

I suppose you could hope that the bottom falls out of the classic car market, but that'd also mean lots of parts companies going bust so I'm not sure that's a good thing.
